Psychologists

In Australia, psychology is a regulated profession and includes registered psychologists and clinical psychologists. They are accredited by the Psychology Board of Australia, which is part of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). At a minimum all psychologists complete a 6-year sequence of university studies and supervised training. A Clinical Psychologist has completed an advanced training program in the form of either a Masters or Doctorate qualification plus a program of supervised practice.

Psychologists are trained in the science of how people think, feel, behave and learn. Psychologists have specialist skills and expertise in assessing, diagnosing, and treating moderate to severe mental health conditions.

How to Get a Mental Health Treatment Plan

The Australian Government's Better Access Initiative provides Medicare rebates to access psychological support from a psychologist or mental health social worker.

To access these rebates you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan which is issued by your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician, written collaboratively between you and your doctor, outlining your mental health goals and treatment options.

With a valid Mental Health Care Plan and referral to I relate. Health, you can claim up to 10 individual Medicare subsidised sessions each calendar year leaving a gap fee to pay of only $60 per session.

If you're unable to book in a session with your GP prior to your first session we can accept a Mental Health Treatment Plan at any point and you'll receive the payment assistance from your next session.

Commonly Asked Questions

You can access I Relate. Health's service using either a mobile device, tablet or computer.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis, visit your nearest hospital emergency department or contact one of the 24/7 mental health support services such as Lifeline on 13 11 14.

If a life is in danger call 000 immediately.

There are two ways to reschedule or cancel an appointment:

  1. Via our online booking system - your booking email includes a link to "cancel appointment" allowing you to cancel your scheduled appointment and book an alternate appointment is required.
  2. Call our friendly customer support team on 1300 473 528.

Please note that appointment cancellations with less than 72 hours notice, including no-shows, will be charged a $100 cancellation fee.

Absolutely. You will receive both SMS and email appointment reminders at least 3 days before your appointment.

Cancellations with more than 72 hours notice do not incur a fee. You can either cancel or reschedule your appointment at no cost. If you cancel your appointment with less than 3 days notice or do not attend an appointment you will be charged a cancellation fee of $100.

Please note that Medicare does not pay for missed appointments.

For pre-paid appointments the cancellation fee will be deducted from the payment you have already made. The balance can either be refunded or transferred as a credit to your rescheduled appointment, whichever option you prefer. If you have not pre-paid we will issue an invoice to you with payment expected within 7 days of the invoice date.

Below are some tips for preparing for your online appointment:

  • Test your equipment (your device, internet, headphones etc.)  before your appointment
  • Check that your devices are sufficiently charged
  • Ensure your phone (and email) is easily accessible - just in case your clinician needs to contact you.
  • Check that your device (computer, tablet, or mobile) has the most up-to-date operating and anti-virus software
  • Consider the best environment to get the most out of your online appointment. Ideally you will create a space that is private, quiet, and free from interruptions

To access Medicare rebates, you need a current Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. This will allow you to claim up to 10 individual psychological counselling sessions each calendar year.

All plans must be dated on or before the date of your session (and must be accompanied by a valid referral). Mental Health Treatment Plans and GP referrals cannot be backdated.

After each session I relate. Health process eligible Medicare rebates via an electronic claim system. Medicare will then pay your rebate into either (a) the account of the card you used to pay, or (b) the bank account you have pre-registered with Medicare.
